Anyone familiar with video games in general is probably at least distantly aware of the Chocobo. A flightless bird that serves as the chief mounts to the characters populating the worlds of Final Fantasy.

Last year, MSNBC published this story, about an extinct carnivorous, flightless, bird who’s skeleton resembles the fabled Chocobo.
These suckers definitely would’ve been big enough to ride or race on. Too bad you probably couldn’t tame one and get them to eat vegetables, though cloning and gene splicing have made stranger things possible.

Interestingly enough, we still do have a few examples of a bird in existence who can fit the “bill”. The almighty…OSTRICH!!
Treat a few ostriches to a few of the gene tweaks we can do to mice and you could make them yellow, docile, smarter, healthier, tireless, and stronger. You could even put performance enhancing compounds in their food supply. All things you’d need to have a reliable Chocobo in real life.
